Interactive Metronome® Training

Interactive Metronome in Action

Gerry Douglas is an Registered Interactive Metronome Provider. He completed training in the USA in 2007

Interactive Metronome is a real-time feedback technology that facilitates improvement and repair of the neurophysiological substrate that facilitates the coordination of vision, sound, movement, and touch. The resulting improved performance facilitates “domain general” learning. That is, the training brings about improvement across a range of functions. Research (see below) provides evidence of improvement in:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Focus and attention
  • Emotional self-regulation
  • Improvement of performance in various sports

“A picture is worth a thousand words”. That’s very true when it comes to being introduced to Interactive Metronome (IM). Make sure you watch the two-minute introductory video below, before reading the rest of this page.

After completing an assessment, an individualised evidence-based training program is put together, designed to facilitate beneficial neuroplastic change. Unlike many “brain training” programs, IM does not work on a “one size fits all” basis. Each trainee’s training program evolves in its content as the training proceeds. You and your IM Provider have instant access to your training results, and on that basis the training goals are constantly being set to the optimal challenge level. Additionally, the design of the program incorporates a patented computer feedback system, that creates the opportunity for trainees to recognise progress the instant it occurs, thereby increasing motivation. These two features enhance the repeated action requirements of the program, creating optimal conditions for beneficial neuroplastic change.

The training involves one appointment per week for 4-6 weeks. Between appointments you use a provided IM Home kit that plugs into your computer, to complete practice sessions at home. You need to complete a minimum of three home practices between your weekly appointments. each lasting anywhere between 10-30 minutes. If you live in Auckland your weekly appointment will also include Neurofeedback training.
